Another 12.5 megalitres a day (Mℓ/d) of treatment capacity has been added to the Klipdrift water treatment works, in Tshwane, following the completion of Module 2.

This forms part of a broader Planned Supply Zone Strategy by Magalies Water, which will see the Klipdrift water treatment works upgraded in four modular phases to increase the capacity of treated water by 50 M/d to supply parts of Hammanskraal.

Module 1 of the package plant was completed in October and is supplying 22.5 Mℓ/d to seven villages including Mandela Village, Marokolong, Ramotse and Steve Bikoville, across Hammanskraal, through the Babelegi reservoir.

The now completed second module adds 12.5 Mℓ/d of treatment capacity to the existing infrastructure and also feeds into the Babelegi reservoir, helping to meet the water demands of high-need areas, including Majakaneng (on the eastern side of Makapanstad Road), Kudube Units 1, 2, 3, 6, 10 and Unit D, and Jubilee tower, Jubilee direct and Dominican tower.

“The completion and commissioning of Module 2 is a critical step in augmenting the existing water supply infrastructure and forms part of a broader strategy by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) to enhance water quality, improve capacity and ensure sustainable service delivery to communities that have historically experienced water challenges,” said Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina during the official handover ceremony held on June 30.

The full upgrade will see the completion of modules 3 and 4 over the next few months, supplying the Hammanskraal and Temba reservoirs respectively.

“The handover of Module 2 is not just about infrastructure. It is about restoring dignity and improving the health and wellbeing of communities who have gone too long without reliable access to clean water.”

Modules 1 and 2 have increased the plant’s treatment capacity by an additional 35 Mℓ/d, which will significantly boost the supply to surrounding areas and help meet the growing demand for potable water in the northern parts of Tshwane.

The City of Tshwane will now embark on flushing the system and performing regular tests from mid-July until the water is certified to be safe, after which the Tshwane Executive Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya will declare the water safe for human consumption.

Until then, residents are requested not to consume the water, which is necessary to ensure they are protected against any waterborne diseases that may arise as a result of the system not being used for a long time.

“The DWS extends its appreciation to all stakeholders, including local contractors, engineers and community representatives, for their cooperation and contribution to the successful completion of this critical phase of this project,” Majodina added.
